The School of Criminal Justice and the College of Social Science proudly celebrate the retirement of Dr. Mary Finn, whose distinguished career has left a lasting mark on Michigan State University and the field of criminal justice.
Throughout her career, Dr. Finn has built a record of achievement in research, teaching, service, and academic leadership. Her research has advanced the understanding of domestic violence, victimization, human trafficking, corrections, and parole. Her publications in multiple leading journals have helped impact criminal justice policy and practice. Throughout her career, Dr. Finn has also mentored students whose accomplishments stand as an enduring part of her legacy.
Dr. Finn joined Michigan State University in 2015 as Professor and Director of the School of Criminal Justice. Here, Dr. Finn led the oldest degree-granting criminal justice program, guided strategic planning efforts, supported faculty and student success, advanced diversity and inclusion initiatives, and helped position the School for continued growth and excellence.
Dr. Finn’s leadership quickly expanded beyond the School. In 2020, during a time of deep transition at the University, Dr. Finn was appointed as Interim Dean of the College of Social Science. Her success in guiding the College through the COVID-19 pandemic and budget constraints led to her appointment as Dean from 2021 to 2023. Dr. Finn’s leadership, decision-making, and commitment to collaboration successfully guided the College through this transformative period. In recognition of her outstanding service and lasting contributions to the College and the University, the Provost awarded her the honorary title of Dean Emeritus.
Following her service as Dean, Dr. Finn served as Distinguished Senior Advisor to the Provost, where she worked on key initiatives related to faculty affairs, institutional effectiveness, policy development, and decision-making. Her willingness to step forward wherever needed reflected a career defined by service and commitment to the broader university community.
Dr. Finn’s contributions extend well beyond titles and accomplishments. Colleagues know her as a thoughtful mentor, trusted advisor, and principled leader who invested deeply in the success of others. Whether supporting students, guiding faculty careers, leading academic programs, or shaping university policy, she approached every role with integrity, professionalism, and generosity.
