Certificate Programs

The School of Criminal Justice offers graduate level certificate programs for students seeking continued education in the field of criminal justice and for those who may eventually wish to pursue a masters degree in Criminal Justice at MSU.

Each certificate program consists of three 3-credit courses, with the exception of Anti-Counterfeiting and Product Protection (A-CAPP), which requires four 3-credit courses, and Cyber Criminology and Cyber Security, which requires five 3-credit courses. Participants who are admitted to the masters program may use up to nine graduate level credits toward elective requirements.

  • Certificate in Anti-Counterfeiting and Product Protection

    The Certificate in Anti-Counterfeiting and Product Protection is an expanded program to assist working professionals and graduate students seeking a well-rounded foundation in anti-counterfeiting and product protection. The topics extend from intellectual infringement counterfeiting to focus on the underlying criminology theories, but also cover the broad product protection field including diversion, tamper-resistance, child-resistance, cargo theft, shoplifting, return and warranty fraud.

     


    Application for the Online Certificate

    Once students enroll in their fourth class, they will need to fill out an application for the certificate. After enrollment and passing grades are confirmed, the certificate will be mailed to the address provided

  • Certificate in Cyber Criminology and Cyber Security

    The Certificate in Cyber Criminology and Cyber Security was designed to assist students and working professionals alike to gain foundational knowledge in the fields of Cybercrime and Cybersecurity. The topics covered in this Transcriptable Certificate range from data systems infrastructure to cyber terror and warfare to digital forensic investigations.

    Requirements

    To obtain the certificate, students must successfully complete the following coursework.

    • CJ 872 - Open Source Intelligence Collection and Analysis
    • CJ 874 - Fundamentals of Cybercrime, Deviance, and Virtual Society
    • CJ 875 - Digital Forensic Investigations
    • CJ 876 - Data Systems/Infrastructure
    • CJ 877 - Cyber Terror and Cyber Warfare

     

    Application for the Online Certificate

    Once students enroll  in their fifth (and final) class, they will need to fill out an application for the certificate with the Registrar's Office.

  • Certificate in Cyber Criminology and Cyber Security (Online)

    The cybercriminology and cybersecurity certificate provides foundational knowledge regarding law enforcement practice and industry responses to cybercrime and cybersecurity. Innovative digital exercises will allow you to polish skills for advancement in criminal justice, cybersecurity and intelligence careers.

    With your online graduate certificate, you will be able to identify various cybercrimes that occur and utilize forensic techniques to appropriately seize and analyze digital evidence from devices like computers, smartphones and tablets.

  • Certificate in Homeland Security

    Michigan State University’s School of Criminal Justice, in collaboration with colleges across campus, has created a three-course online certificate program that allows working professionals and graduate students to add a focus in homeland security to their career or academic plans.

    This innovative and challenging program from one of the nation’s top schools of criminal justice is meant for practitioners and others interested in updating their skills.

    Requirements

    To obtain the certificate, students must successfully complete the following coursework.

    • CJ 803 - Foundations in Homeland Security - 3 Credits
    • CJ 809 - Issues in Criminal Justice: Public/Private Partnerships in Emergency Preparedness and Homeland Security - 3 Credits
    • CJ 838 - Terrorism - 3 Credits

  • Certificate in International Focus

    The School of Criminal Justice has created a three-course online certificate program that allows working professionals and graduate students to enhance their knowledge base in international aspects and to further their career or academic plans.

    Courses are offered entirely online, and are taught by the same faculty members who are involved in the on-campus program. A number of online support services are available to assist students.

    Requirements

    To obtain the certificate, students must successfully complete the following coursework:

    • CJ 822 - Comparative Criminal Justice - 3 Credits
    • CJ 823 - Globalization of Crime - 3 Credits


    and one of the following:

    • CJ 809 - Issues in Criminal Justice: Public/Private Partnerships in Emergency Preparedness - 3 Credits
    • CJ 838 - Terrorism - 3 Credits

  • Certificate in Law Enforcement Intelligence and Analysis

    Each class in the certificate program is 3 semester credits, which translates to 45 contact hours per semester. Each class will explore 10 – 15 different explicit topics.

    Students may choose three of four classes to help provide some degree of focus for each individual’s interest as well as to add some flexibility for the enrollment schedule. If students select CJ 809 Issues in Criminal Justice as one of the classes, they must be sure they enroll in the Public/Private Partnerships in Emergency Preparedness and Homeland Security section.

    Requirements

    To obtain the certificate, students must successfully complete three of the following courses:

    • CJ 802 - Law Enforcement Intelligence Operations - 3 Credits
    • CJ 809 - Issues in Criminal Justice: Public/Private Partnerships in Emergency Preparedness and Homeland Security - 3 Credits
    • CJ 837 - The Intelligence Process and Counterterrorism - 3 Credits
    • CJ 838 - Terrorism - 3 Credits

    • CJ 890 - Independent Study - 3 Credits
