Biography

Stephen Oliphant is a PhD student at the School of Criminal Justice at Michigan State University. His primary research interests include firearm policy, protection orders, the role of law enforcement in enforcing firearm relinquishment laws, violence prevention, and criminal justice policy generally.

Stephen received his Bachelor of Arts from Kalamazoo College in 2015, where he was a member of the men’s varsity basketball team and studied abroad at the University of the West Indies St. Augustine campus in Trinidad & Tobago. Stephen attended the Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy at the University of Michigan and received his Master of Public Policy and a certificate in Injury Science in 2019. While at the University of Michigan, he worked with the Firearm Safety Among Children & Teens (FACTS) Consortium and assisted in research addressing youth firearm injuries and deaths.
