Associate Professor Christina DeJong was quoted in the online Mashable article Sandra Bland was absolutely right to protest violent male authority.
Dr. DeJong stated that while law enforcement officers may be more lenient to women than men, even chivalrous in some circumstances, it can depend on the woman’s behavior during the interaction. Research suggests that police officers may react harshly when there is a perceived lack of deference from the detained.
Christina DeJong is an associate professor in the School of Criminal Justice at Michigan State University. Her research interests focus on violence against women, hate crimes based on sexual orientation and gender identity, genocidal violence, and gender differences in policing.
