James Woodward currently serves as clerk of court/district court executive for the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Missouri, based in St. Louis. He was appointed to his current position in January 2000 after eight years in the same court as chief deputy clerk. Before joining the federal courts, Jim was employed as Associate Director of the Administrative Office of the Illinois Courts for eight years. Jim is a 1979 graduate of the University of Missouri -Columbia School of Law and is a 1990 graduate fellow of the Institute for Court Management. He is admitted to practice law in Mississippi, Missouri and Illinois, and is an active member of the Federal Court Clerks Association and the National Association for Court Management. Jim’s teaching and research interests include caseflow management, alternative dispute resolution and self-represented litigant services. Jim is an adjunct instructor for the Michigan State University’s Judicial Administration Program and the Pre-Law Program at Saint Louis University. He also has assisted international rule of law projects in Thailand and Kosovo.
