Doctoral student Marva Goodson has been awarded the Council of Graduate Students Leadership Endowment Fellowship for her work with Ingham County youth who attend a court-run high school.
Ms. Goodson is the co-founder and director of Youth Advancement Through Athletics (YATA), which she describes as “a multi-faceted youth development program which provides athletics, mentorship, career-driven activities, and community engagement opportunities for at-risk students.”
She trains MSU undergraduate students to participate and provide the youth with holistic interventions designed to reduce the high-schoolers’ risk scores and truancy. As of 2016, over 75 interventions have been administered. The project uses a risk assessment tool that targets four domains indicating risk for re-offending: leisure and recreation time, attitudes and orientations, substance abuse, and personality and behavior.
